Talking of Thomas Metzinger - you might find his recent book "The Elephant and the Blind" of interest. In case not aware it's based on a research project with a very large number of experienced meditators. He's brought together the various aspects of awake awareness and shares their meditation reports to illustrate each of the key qualities. I found it an absolutely fascinating read, and a very interesting mirror to hold up against your own practice.

Thanks for the rec — I actually have the book lined up on my kindle, but haven't jumped in yet. Good nudge to do so.
